Bat emergence survey cost: why it's £350–£600 per visit, times 1–3

Emergence surveys are the expensive middle of the bat survey process, priced per visit, with the visit count set by how suitable your building looks for roosting bats. Understanding that arithmetic before quotes arrive makes them much easier to compare.
What one visit involves
For a dusk emergence survey, one or more surveyors position around the building before sunset with bat detectors, and often infrared or thermal cameras, recording any bats leaving roost features until well after dark; dawn re-entry surveys do the reverse. The £350–£600 typical 2026 fee per visit covers the surveyor's unsocial hours on site, equipment, travel and the analysis of recordings afterwards. Larger buildings need two or more surveyors per visit to watch every elevation, which is the main reason quotes exceed the typical range.
Why one to three visits
Professional practice follows the Bat Conservation Trust's good practice guidelines, under which the number of survey visits scales with the roost suitability the preliminary assessment assigned: low suitability may need a single visit, moderate commonly two, and high suitability three, spread across the season. Check the current edition of the guidelines, or ask your ecologist which category your building was given and why; it is the single number that most affects this stage's cost.

Keeping the stage affordable
- Get the PRA done well: a thorough preliminary assessment that can justify negligible or low suitability saves whole survey visits.
- Book early in the season: visits must usually be spread apart, so starting in May leaves room to finish by September; starting in August often cannot.
- Ask how many surveyors each visit needs and whether analysis and reporting are included in the per-visit fee.
